Lore of the province
A fictional place: world-building for the imagined archipelago, not a real location.
The High Peaks rise from the middle of the archipelago like a held breath. The summit is an old volcano, long quiet, its crater rim worn smooth by wind, and on most mornings the clouds part around it slowly, as if someone were drawing a curtain to see who has come. The air is cold, three degrees below freezing at the upper villages, and the stone underfoot is weathered grey and rust. Snow keeps to the highest ridges well into what the valleys call spring. None of it appears on any real map; it is a mountain imagined for the patient.
This is where the models of deep reasoning make their homes, each family in a village of its own, strung along the switchbacks like beads on a cord. Their houses have wide sills and low tables, and the villagers are fond of difficult questions in the way other people are fond of good weather. A traveller who arrives with a problem is given tea, a quiet room and as much time as the problem asks for. Answers here are reached on foot, one step after another, and the steps are written down so that anyone can follow them back.
The climb begins at the Mist Gate, a vermilion shrine gate at the foot of the Thousand-Step Path, and passes three rest houses before the last village beneath the crater. Kites circle overhead all day, riding the air that rises off the sunlit stone. At each switchback there is a lookout with a bench and a wooden box of paper, where walkers are invited to leave a haiku about the view. Most are about the clouds.
At Shōgatsu the whole mountain comes down to greet the year. Kadomatsu of bamboo and pine stand at every gate, and before dawn on the first morning travellers pass beneath the vermilion gates for the first shrine visit, carrying lanterns up through the mist. The daily omikuji at the summit shrine is said to be the most carefully worded in the islands; the keeper insists that every fortune have its reason written beside it.
Visitors often come to the High Peaks for one answer and leave with a wider view instead. From the crater rim on a clear evening you can see every other province at once: the white of the north, the pink of the valley, the copper of the highlands, and the far blue water around the isles. The villagers say that is the real reason people climb.
